What to do
A moderately challenging day hike to the Lakuri Bhanjyang ridge at 1,991 metres — one of the finest forest hikes on the southern edge of Kathmandu Valley. The trail from Lamatar (1 hour drive via Gwarko from Kathmandu) climbs steadily through dense oak and rhododendron forest for about 3 hours before opening onto a broad viewpoint ridge where Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur stretch across the valley below and the Himalayan horizon fills the northern sky. Carry a packed picnic — the ridgeline is the perfect place to eat with a view. Tea houses at the base serve simple meals on the way back.
Jeep up to the Lakuri Bhanjyang pass, then ride the South Valley Descent — loose stone switchbacks down through Tika Bhairab and Lele village to the valley floor. The singletrack through the Pharsang ridge section is the best sustained downhill in the southern Kathmandu Valley.
Hike up from Hattiban Resort through pine forest to the Lakuri Bhanjyang pass at 2,438 m — the south rim's highest walkable point. Open grassland at the top offers wide views of the valley on one side and the Terai plains stretching south on the other. Often combined with the Champadevi summit as a 7-hour circuit.
A 90 km circuit through the quiet southern Valley — Kirtipur → Dakshinkali temple → Pharping → Sesh Narayan → Tika Bhairab in Lele valley → Godawari Botanical Garden → back via Sunakothi. Mostly sealed road with great temples, forests, and viewpoints en route; perfect for a 6-hour weekend ride.
