What to do
Cycle from Birtamod on the gentle grade to Arjundhara, continue on the hill road through tea estate outskirts and bamboo forest to the small ridge above Arjundhara at 450 m. About 25 km one-way with 300 m climbing — the transition from flat Terai to hill forest is the main draw. Return on the same road with a long, easy descent.
The hill streams above Arjundhara run clear and cold even in summer — follow the trail from the main road to the nearest stream confluence in the bamboo-and-sal forest for a shaded riverside picnic. The cool forest air is a complete contrast to the Birtamod Terai heat and takes less than 45 minutes to reach from town.
A rewarding 75 km one-way ride from the flat Terai (127 m) at Birtamod up through Arjundhara and the foothills all the way to Ilam town (1,677 m) on a continuously winding hill road — the same road that connects Jhapa to Nepal's tea heartland. Perfect as a day ride to Ilam or an overnight with return via Soktim.
